Bhailigh slua mór ag léirsiú Dé Sathairn [27ú Márta] taobh amuigh de Phríosún an Chaisleáin Riabhaigh i gCondae Ros Comáin le tacú leis an iascaire Pat O’Donnell as Maigh Eo, a cuireadh faoi ghlas i ndiaidh agóidí in éadan leagan píblíne gáis de chuid Shell i ngar dá bhaile in Iorras, Condae Mhaigh Eo.

Ag labhairt ag an imeacht mhol urlabhraí éirígí Thír Chonaill Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig an méid daoine a tháinig chun tacú le Pat O’Donnell. “Tá an tUasal O’Donnell faoi ghlas díreach mar gheall ar a sheasamh ar son a phobail in éadan comhlacht ilnáisiúnta a bhfuil cuma chead a gcinn acu,” arsa é.

“Tá an chuma ann nach bhfuil an cháipéis orthu roimh aon duine, gur mhaith pobal Éireannach a fhorlámhú agus saolta a chur i mbaol trí ghás amh píobaithe a thabhairt i dtír ar mhaithe le brábús a dhéanamh dóibh féin agus dá scairshealbhóirí. Nuair a thosaíonn Shell agus eile ag obair amach ó chósta Dhún na nGall, tá seans maith ann go dtarlóidh ceist chosúil má thógann said na píobaí intíre chuig scaglann ar nós an chinn a bhfuil á tógáil i Ros Dumhach. Thiocfadh leis seo tarlú i gcuid ar bith d’iarthar na tire, ag cur saolta agus na timpeallachta i mbaol. Tá dúil againn go mbeidh mar Pat O’Donnell ann le seasamh ar ár son.”

Chríochnaigh sé, “Tá an tír seo ag tabhairt aghaidh ar ghéarchéim eacnamaíochta gan fasach agus tá an rialtas seo compháirteach i ligean do leithéidí Shell breis agus €500 billiún [£451 billiún] d’ola agus gáis a fhoghlú ón stat seo. Tá seo doghlactha agus glaoim ar rialtas na Sé Chondae Fichead smacht a fháil ar thaisce ola agus gáis na hÉireann, rud a bhfuil an deis acu déanamh anois chun leasa na ndaoine go léir.”

Our Oil and Gas Can Save the Economy

A large crowd gathered at a demonstration on Saturday [March 27] outside Castlerea Prison in Co. Roscommon in support of Mayo fisherman Pat O'Donnell, who was jailed after protests against the laying of a gas pipeline by Shell near his home in Erris Co.Mayo.

Speaking at the event éirígí Tir Chonaill spokesperson Micheál Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig welcomed the fact that so many showed up to support Mr O'Donnell. “Mr O’Donnell is in jail solely for standing up for his community against a large multi-national who appear to be above the law”, he said.

“They seem answerable to no-one, wish to run roughshod over an Irish community and put lives at risk by bringing piped raw gas ashore solely in the interest of making money for themselves and their shareholders. When Shell and others start working off the shores of Donegal, there’s a strong possibility for a similar issue to occur if they bring pipes ashore to a refinery such as the one being built in Rossport. This could happen in any part of the west of the county, endangering lives and the environment. Hopefully there will be someone like Pat to stand up for us.”

He concluded, “This country faces an unprecedented economic crisis and the government is complicit in allowing the likes of Shell to plunder more than €500 billion [£451 billion] worth of oil and gas from this state. This is simply not acceptable and I call on the Twenty-Six County government to take control of the oil and gas reserves of Ireland, which they are in a position to do right now and use them for the benefit of all the people.”
